Event Details

Where: Gut Level Sheffield, S1 2PD
When: 6pm-8:30pm, Thursday 20th November 2025
Tickets: Free, but you need to be a Gut Level member (£2+ per year)
Who: People curious about making strange things with patterns

What: Our monthly Sheffield pattern club meetup. All people interested in the stranger side of patterns welcome! These meetups will be focussed on sharing practice-lead investigations into pattern-making in heritage and contemporary arts, crafts and music. For example if you’re a textile/fiber artist who is curious about creative coding, a coder who wants to be a musician, a musician who is curious about choreography, or a choreographer who wants to integrate braiding into their work, an origami artist who.. well you get the idea! We want to make this a safe, fun and diverse space to share ideas. We actively encourage ‘imposters’ to attend!

This month we’ll have a beginner-friendly workshop exploring Carnatic rhythms, lead by our own Alex McLean. Alex will introduce us to simple (yet fascinating) ‘konnakol’ rhythms from South India — a kind of ancient spoken language for geometric rhythms. We will explore konnakol patterns by speaking and clapping, and play with the same patterns on laptop (or any similar device with keyboard and web browser) using the strudel software. Please bring your own device or let us know if you need to borrow one!

The meetup is free but you will need to be a member of / join gut level. Gut level membership starts at just £2 per year.

These meetups are open to all. Attendees are expected to read and respect our code of conduct: https://patternclub.org/code-of-conduct/.
